Fairy Tales

The fairy-tale, poetic allure of Fritz Lang’s Der müde Tod has remained unbroken since 1921. The cinema still quotes the vocabulary of this classic film, while at the same time, leitmotifs such as stairs, crossways, and the treatment of narrative time shape the style of Lang’s entire oeuvre. He is one of the directors who love associations, and seen from this perspective, Der müde Tod requires the audience not only to follow the complex, intricate narrative, but at the same time, to “read” and interpret the film as text. This lecture will demonstrate that the montage of this silent film can be decoded in the same way as contemporary iconographic patterns.
