Expressionism is one of the central reference systems in twentieth-century art, and at the same time, it was and still is one of modernism’s fatal experiments. The expressionist utopia involving self-redemption achieved through the unconditional intensification of arousal affects music, the visual arts, film, theater, and poetry just as it affects politics, society, and the view of the world in general. This lecture will examine the exemplary vision behind the notion of linking the arts for the purpose of transforming our usual attitudes toward life and death.
