Repetition is fundamental to our lives: mechanised, uniform activities structure not only the industrial world of working environment, but also allow the flow of activities on our streets. Religious, traditional or military ceremonial practices are based on the repetition of learned patterns of behaviour and thus approach apparently profane actives such as cleaning. Repetition does not just make our lives easier, however, or more efficient in economic terms. Repetitions also allow a glimpse into the preconscious spaces of the human psyche; there, where automatism and involuntary patterns of reaction determine our actions. This makes it immensely exciting for artists.

In the selection Ornament and Obsession , twelve Rhineland based artists bring the obstinate and occasionally resistant character of the concept of repetition to the fore. They also emphasise its formal qualities based on pattern, ornamentation and sequences, and cultivate the beauty of serialisation: procedures are transformed into moving images, so that they literally produce patterns that spread ornamentally over the screen. The dissecting gaze of the artist reveals entertaining, grotesque and sometimes critical aspects of repetition in art and everyday life.
